Bill Clinton Sends a Subtle Message

Bill Clinton spoke to the delegates at the Convention last evening. He offered a joke about his age and that of Donald Trump. Both men are seventy-eight, retired types in most cases.

But these are two men, who have been Prresident, admired certainly by those in their own party, and in spite of what the media reports, respected by many for their service to our nation. They both dealt with adversity under fire and are still voices to be heard.

President Clinton brought up age during his speech and indicated he was younger than President Trump. Yes he is; by two months. But he NEVER would have referred to age had Joe Biden been the nominee because Biden, in his current condition, has aged older in his brain than he is chronologically.

His hands were noticeably shaking, displaying potentially Parkinson’s disease or other elderly illness. But his mind seemed to be as sharp as ever.

He was reflective in his extemporaneous speech, saying, “I want to say this from the bottom of my heart, I have no idea how many more of these I’ll be able to come to. I started in ’76 and I’ve been [to] every one since — no, ’72. Lord, I’m getting old.”

But he came across, still, as mostly likeable to me, unlike every other dour speaker during this convention. He was jovial, self-depreciating, in spite of his grizzled appearance and slower gait, and friendly, even as he spoke to those who generally did not support him while he was in office.

At another point, he implicitly acknowledged Democrats were relieved to be free of Biden and his lagging poll numbers against Trump, describing party members as “happy” because “we feel like a load is off our shoulders."

That was an honest statement which went unnoticed by the delegates in attendance. But not to those who actually paid attention.

Perhaps, as Trump’s former friend, Clinton was sending him a subtle message to push up his game. Perhaps, as a good American, he really wants Trump to beat Harris to save our nation from falling into a Socialist quagmire from which there is no escape.

Let’s hope Donald Trump was listening.
