Wouldn't It Be Nice?

For anyone who picked up and strummed a guitar, sat on a piano bench to touch the ivories, or sat on a stool behind a drum kit, today is a sad day. One of the geniuses from the sixties, who was a musical inspiration to many, whether to write lyrics or notes, passed away today.

Brian Wilson, founder, creator and the genius behind the surfing sounds, race cars and Pet Sounds of the 1960s was 82. He would have been 83 next Friday.

Much like John and Paul, he gave us songs which stretched across time, touching those of us who grew up in the 60s, listening to I Get Around, Surfing Safari, In My Room, God Only Knows and even in 2012, That’s Why God Made the Radio.

And then, we passed that pleasure on to our children and grandchildren.

His music will live on still for years to come, on satellite, on flash drives and even still, on vinyl and cd’s. Because it was great music.

Like the Beatles or the Four Seasons.

One of the best albums ever made was recorded by Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys, called Pet Sounds. And even the great Paul McCartney has said it was that album which inspired him and John Lennon to create Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the other great album from that time.

Paul McCartney even has said that God Only Knows, which was his favorite, is the greatest song ever written. And he should know a thing or two about great songs.

We all know about the struggles Brian Wilson endured with drugs, psychological disorders and depression. And yet, through it all, he managed to battle his way through his life, making a positive mark on many.

He was an accomplished man who ultimately will have left the world a better place than the one he found.

Wouldn’t it be nice if someone could say that about any of us? Rest In Peace, Brian.

You will be missed.
