As of yesterday, they sit one game up over the second-place Phillies, in first place in their division. They are tied with the Cubs with the best record in the National League at 37 wins and 22 losses. And as a bonus, they have a better record than the other New York team, the Yankees.
Since last May 31, their record is 100 and 64 across the two seasons.
The top offensive producers are Lindor, Alonso, Soto and Nimmo, with 13, 12, 10 and 9 homeruns, respectively. These four are also the top producers in runs batted in, with 34, 46, 28 and 29, also respectively.
And all four players are leaders on the field and in the clubhouse. Any one could be the Captain, like David Wright, John Franco, and Keith Hernandez before them. But based on all metrics, currently, the Mets are remiss in not naming Francisco Lindor as the current team Captain.
He led the team to the playoffs last year and almost was named MVP for his contributions to the team's resurgence last year. And after a slow start, he is in the mix again for MVP.
The starting pitching has been spot on this year and the relief has been lights out, with Edwin Diaz and his 2.22 ERA and his 12 and 0 saves record leading the way.
So, with over one third of the season already in the rear view mirror, and having stood their ground, winning almost all the series played and having several respectable winning streaks to point at, the Mets are having a fine year, potentially with a chance to win it all.
By the way, they have not lost more than three games in a row at any point yet this season.
But of course, that is why teams have to PLAY the games. The stats and the potential outcomes on paper mean nothing.
It will be a fun next couple of months for every Mets fan, as we watch our boys of summer fight through the coming dog days. By July 4, we will see where the season will go. That is the traditional halfway mark of every season.
Meanwhile, sit back cheer our boys and scream, LETS GO METS!!
