Piracy was a major part, but terrorism was always in focus. The prior American Administration rattled its sabers, but did absolutely nothing to stop it.
Now, as with all things, there is a new Sheriff in town who has shown already that he is not the paper tiger his predecessor was. One would think Iran and its client states would take notice.
“To all Houthi terrorists, YOUR TIME IS UP, AND YOUR ATTACKS MUST STOP, STARTING TODAY. IF THEY DON’T, HELL WILL RAIN DOWN UPON YOU LIKE NOTHING YOU HAVE EVER SEEN BEFORE!” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform.
Iran’s support for its proxy must end “immediately,” Trump warned, cautioning the country not to threaten the US or international shipping lanes.
So now that he retaliated as promised, the Houthi political bureau described the attacks as a “war crime.”
“Our Yemeni armed forces are fully prepared to respond to escalation with escalation,” it said in a statement.
At least thirty-one were killed and 101 others injured in the U.S. strikes, mostly women and children, Anees al-Asbahi, spokesperson for the Houthi-run health ministry said in an updated toll on Sunday.
Of course, Iran’s foreign ministry condemned strikes on Yemen as a “gross violation of the principles of the United Nations Charter and the fundamental rules of international law”, in a statement shared by state media.
And the top Commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards reacted on Sunday by saying the Houthis are independent and take their own strategic and operational decisions. The Mullahs are trying to distance themselves from any responsibility to any Houthi actions, knowing that sanctions are in their very near future.
Still, Tehran is increasingly concerned that mounting public anger over economic hardships could erupt into mass protests, which are increasingly hard for the Iranian Revolutionary Guard to quell.
Perhaps, finally, Iran and its client states will get the message to start acting like civilized societies because there WILL BE hell to pay if they don’t.
