Time to Shut Down the Department of Education

President Trump will be fulfilling yet another campaign promise in the coming days. Now that Linda McMahon has been confirmed as Secretary of Education, he will be instructing her to shut down the Department.

The President will reportedly use his executive powers to direct Education Secretary Linda McMahon to “take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Education Department” based on “the maximum extent appropriate and permitted by law.” Of course, Democrats will complain that he is not permitted to do this. But he will encourage Republicans to support his goal.

The experiment of controlling American education through Federal programs and dollars, and the unaccountable bureaucrats those programs and dollars support, has failed our children, our teachers, and our families,” reads the draft order, which was labeled “pre-decisional.”

It was a lofty goal, with high ideals. But over the decades, it has become a quagmire for the failures which the states had done for more than the prior century and a half.

Now, it is a bastion of bureaucratic and governmental incompetence, pandering to the NEA and other teacher unions, without regard to the children it was supposed to serve.

We’d like to make sure that we are presenting a plan that I think our senators could get on board with, and our Congress could get on board with, that would have a better-functioning Department of Education,” Secretary McMahon said during her confirmation hearing.

Key programs involving Title I funding for low-income institutions, as well as Pell Grants and Public Service Loan Forgiveness, will remain in place, McMahon promised.

It is time to recognize that the idealistic goal of President Carter has turned into a forty-six year colossal failure and needs to be put out of our and our children’s misery before their education becomes hopelessly lost.
