The Promise of a New Spring

And so now, we mark endings: the Christmas Season, the Jets (again) football season, the 2024 election campaign. These all officially ended today, with the certification of the electoral college votes.

But we have already commenced in earnest to Pitchers and Catchers, the traditional start to Spring Training. Yes, friends. BASEBALL is just around the corner

There are approximately thirty-nine days until Pitchers and Catchers are required to show up in Florida and Arizona. And yes, I know football isn’t done yet. But for me it is.

My team isn’t in it, so I will watch any playoffs and the Super Bowl as a disinterested, casual fan. Which is something a long-suffering fan does almost every year.

But right now, I see that my Mets are scheduled to start on or about February 12 or 13 with the first Spring game scheduled for February 22 against the Astros in Port St Lucie. And then we roll.

In the meantime, other than perhaps a couple of more pickups in the relief pitching core, the roster is all set. Except, for FIRST BASE.

It is time for Pete Alonso to ditch Scott Boras and speak directly to Steve Cohen. Enough, already. If the Mets really want him, they should make him a deal he could live with.

Seven years, $210MM, with a player option after three. That will get it done. Best deal for a first baseman out there right now. Bar none.

He can retire as a Met and be guaranteed his number in the roof. Next to this year's addition, Captain David Wright.

Then, make Francisco Lindor the Team Captain. He earned that since he has been here.

And when the Mets win the World Series, it will be a win for everybody. Players, coaches, owner. Everybody.

Including the fans.
