Electoral Vote Count - 1/6/2025

At 1 PM today, the current Vice President, Kamala Harris, as President of the Senate, will begin the process to Constitutionally certify that Donald Trump was elected President of the United States for the next four years. She will count each state's electoral votes in the presence of the House of Representatives and the Senate, along with the media and millions of Americans watching the event unfold at home on television.

There is historical significance to this. This is the first time in twenty-four years that the person who ran for President had to preside over his or her own defeat as the loser for President. And only the fourth time since 1960, the others being Nixon, 1961, Humphrey, 1969, Gore, 2001 and now Harris.

Surprisingly, it was one hundred years before Nixon lost to JFK that another candidate running for President had to announce his own defeat for the Presidency, and that was John Breckinridge, who lost to Abraham Lincoln

The totals announced will be Trump 312, Harris, 226.

It is traditionally a short ceremony and will be the first of the 119th Congress.

Soon enough, it will be done and the work of the next Congress will move forward.
