No wonder the bosses at CBS News did not want to turn them over to the FCC.
It was reported all over that the FCC is reviewing whether the broadcast violates “news distortion” rules. While the agency is required to be certain no censorship is applied to First Amendment free speech rights, it is obligated to make certain broadcasters do not intentionally distort the news.
If the FCC finds evidence of misleading editing, it could impact regulatory approval of Paramount’s $8 billion merger with Skydance, which was set to close by next month.
That timeframe may be pushed back because the FCC’s public hearings are scheduled for March 7, with a reply slated for March 24, according to a filing by the agency.
In addition, the ultimate ruling may have an unbridled impact on the lawsuit Donald Trump brought against CBS while he was still a candidate. Presently, Trump and CBS are in negotiations for a settlement to bring this to a conclusion.
It is rumored that the ABC settlement with Trump over the Stephanopoulos interview is a potential benchmark.
Ironically, it will be painful for the legacy media to be the major benefactors to pay for the Trump Presidential Library after being called “fake news” by him and being proven to be so, by the amount they paid to settle pending lawsuits.
And Shari Redstone isn’t too happy about this, either. It will delay, if not impact, her expected $1.8Bn payday from the sale.
You can be sure someone’s head will be rolling soon at the CBS broadcast center.
