The Golden Rule and Us

We have seen over the years many occasions of prejudice, discrimination and outright meanness by many different people against our fellow man and woman. We have tried as a society to try and right the wrongs as they occur, by writing laws such as the Civil Rights Act, as amended and other federal and state laws which ultimately place us all in a protected class. I wrote a bit about this earlier this week in The Pain of Discrimination.

Today, there was a story of a woman in Texas who converted to Islam, and part of this religion's dietary law prohibits the eating of pork, similar to that in the Jewish faith. Catholics also  have dietary laws pertaining to specific times of the liturgical year, like Lent.

The reason this is important was that apparently this woman went into a local Fridays Restaurant and ordered a Cobb Salad without the bacon. The waiter appeared annoyed at the request, said the customer, Nicole Queen, but was presented with the order as requested, along with a complimentary glass of iced tea. When she sipped it, she said, pieces of bacon came into her mouth along with the tea.

When she complained to the manager, according to Ms Queen he didn't believe her. Of course, the corporate offices issued a statement, which reads as follows:

"We want everyone to have a great time at Friday's. We don't tolerate discrimination in any form. We launched an investigation around what happened yesterday and will take appropriate actions and update as more information becomes available."

Now, my point here is not whether the story is really true or not, because it certainly is a "he said/she said" incident. But, if it is true, perhaps it's time for all of us to take heed and remember the old adage: Do unto others as you would want done to you.

It's the least we can do in a civilized and enlightened society.
