As this is written, there are 38 hours to go until the United States government theoretically runs out of money. But based on the patterns of the men and women in both houses of the Congress, we know that these "leaders" like to play the childhood game of "Kick the Can" down the road.
Presently, the overall concept of this latest solution(?) is to continue spending at the current pace until January 15 and to extend the debt limit to February. In that way, we can avoid making any decision until after Christmas. Ho Ho Ho!
It seems that the media keeps reporting that the "nasty" Republicans are the cause for our troubles. But in reality, it is the fault of all sides to delay, once again, facing of the financial crisis which any reasonable economist or financier is brewing just below the surface. It's as if the pasta will boil over if we don't lower the flame just a bit.
Obviously, the devil is in the details, which no one really wants to discuss now, at least not until, in the dead of night, the legislation is passed and the President signs it before anyone has a chance to read what is in it. Wait! Where have we read this before? Hmmm, sounds awfully familiar, doesn't it?
We know that no one wants to be blamed for allowing the country to default on its debt. But isn't really getting a little bit tiresome to play the same game over and over? The citizenry is getting bored with the childish behavior our elected representatives and senators, along with the bully tactics of the President. I thought they all graduated from elementary school. Apparently not.
Several weeks ago, I read a column by "Hardball" Chris Matthews, with whom I do not ever agree, where he related the ability of President Reagan and Speaker O'Neill, while both being strong personalities, understood that they had the power to bring down the American economy and yet, as reasonable men, decided that half the loaf was better than the alternative. Tragically, none of current players get it.
It's time to get off the stick, boys and girls. We have had enough of the nonsense which seems, sadly, to be the accepted status quo of your petulance and intransigence. We are mad as hell, and we are not going to take it anymore.
So, watch out, folks. The Governed has had enough of your tactics and is considering the withdrawal of its consent. Get back there and do your jobs.
Or come November, 2014 you may not have one.
