The Mets Need To Step It Up

There are now only twenty-five games left in the New York Mets season. They are playing at their best levels this year, at nine games over .500 at a record of 73 and 64.

 

Last month, I wrote a commentary entitled The Mets New Mission, where I discussed they needed to win 67% of their remaining games. While they improved from six to nine games over, with their current record, they would need to win 80% or TWENTY games to end up at the same ninety-three wins I nentioned in that commentary.

A much harder task, indeed, with twenty-five less games to play.

Improbable? Yes, but not impossible. Pete Alonso needs to snap out of his season-long funk and step up his game. Yes, he has thirty home runs, but other than 2020, he has never hit less than thirty-seven. If I take out his 2020 production, prior to this year, he averages forty-four home runs per season.

He needs to step it up, especially since he is looking for a long-term mega-contract after this season. Getting ten more and leading the Mets to a playoff berth will certainly help his case.

Francisco Lindor is having an MVP season and has earned his stripes since coming to the Mets, to be named the next Captain. But it will be bittersweet without at least a chance to play in October.

Edwin Diaz blew several save opportunities on this recent road trip. He has no room left to give up and blow any more chances.

These three key players need to play playoff baseball now to lead the team to the promised land. If they do this, others will follow the example and perhaps, on September 30 we will know who the Mets will play in the first round.

The next season, the playoffs, will begin and the slate will start even. Then, we will cheer that sixty-two season chant:
