In the midst of the Ukrainian crisis, where Vlad is flexing the muscles of the Russian Army both at Ukraine and at the US, President Obama decided to play "tough guy" on Monday with our only true ally in the Middle East. He decided to take the approach to talk tough with Benjamin Netanyahu and told him to concede and cave in the on-going talks with the Palestinians.
What did the Prime Minister do? He basically told Obama to take a hike like every other world leader is doing these days.
Trust me, there is no love lost between these two men. President Obama has, since 2009, made things difficult for Prime Minister Netanyahu and Israel over the peace talks regarding the creation of a two-nation relationship in Israel. Netanyahu has consistently made the argument, most recently on Monday that Israel has made all the concessions it is going to make until the Palestinian Authority makes a similar number of concessions Israel had requested.
I have provided a link to the story in The Guardian for your review.
In addition, while Netanyahu will be speaking later this week to the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), Obama will skip the annual conference. Probably, because when he was running for re-election in 2012, he promised to support Israel in its quest for a resolution with the Palestinians and as with so many of his
other promises, he has demonstrated that he is NOT a man of his word. He is a political opportunist and nothing more.
The Prime Minister expressed disappointment with the US handling of sanctions with Iran. "Netanyahu’s visit to Washington has not gone as well as might have been hoped. Israel had been keen to use the visit to focus on its concerns about US sanctions relief for Iran, not to face the veiled threat of sanctions itself. And the meeting was overshadowed by the international response against Russia for its aggression in Crimea."
So, because the President has displayed a weak backbone to the world, the Prime Minister has mustered the courage to basically tell Obama to "stick it" regarding further concessions.
You know what? Good for him! Israel is our only ally in the Middle East and President Obama had treated her like he should instead be treating the Palestinians. However, the Palestinians have been intransigent and obstinate precisely because we have treated Israel so poorly.
Slowly, the United States is becoming a pariah on the world stage and that train is picking up speed. The USSR, uh, I mean Russia has essentially bypassed us; at least this has been demonstrated thus far with the Ukraine nightmare. Soon, we will lose the support of the EU and the rest of Europe, and Israel doesn’t love us anymore, either.
The alliances we have forged with so much of the world after WWII are starting to crumble. If the President continues on his destructive path, we will be isolated, with no friends and no partners. I guess it makes sense because we will have a standing Army much like we had in the 30s, when we really were an isolationist country.
Netanyahu sees it and so does Putin. Unfortunately, no one in this administration understands the evolving New World Order. If Obama is allowed to continue down this road, the next President will be digging us out of a hole greater than Reagan had to after Carter.
And unless the gutless Congress finally stands up and says "enough", any resemblance to what used to be will be purely coincidental.
