The Middle East continues to explode each day. Wednesday, Egypt fell deeper toward Civil War, as more violence erupted between pro- and anti- Morsi factions, and the Egyptian military's inability to maintain control. This is the country that we have pinned our hopes on to keep the peace in the region.
Israel's position in this ongoing fatwah between warring Muslim countries is becoming untenable. Israel sits south of Syria's Civil War to the north and Egypt to the south. The fear is that these civil wars will spill over its borders and Israel will become an unwilling participant in this mess, because it could be trying to defend two fronts.
Once these wars cross into Israel, the complexity of the situation will change. The Israeli army will be fighting the invaders to push them back and the Palestinians will be drawn into the battle, as well. At this point, outright Civil War will breakout between Palestinians and Israelis, which will prompt the warring Egyptians and Syrians to join the Palestinian cause.
While Israel has a strong military, it is not so strong to be able to hold off a violent outbreak on its soil to this degree. And don't forget that less than 1,000 miles to the east, sits Iran. This makes the Israeli's problem go from bad, horribly bad, to worstest. And I mean the worst possible scenario imaginable.
And what's the west and the US to do? Wring its hands? Call for a UN Security Council meeting? Look for NATO to become involved in some way?
All of these responses have been tried before for other problems that have flared up around the Muslim world, to minimal success. Most recently, the NATO involvement in the Libyan "Arab Spring" resulted in the assassination of Col. Khaddafi, by anti-Khaddafi elements in Libya. And ultimately, this action resulted in the death of our Ambassador, Chris Stevens and three other brave defenders.
At this point, the United States needs to take a stand in this problem, and stand with Israel. I realize that, yet again, we are involving our military in the Muslim world. But of all the counties that currently exists in the Fertile Crescent, only Israel is our true and dedicated ally.
Perhaps, if we step in now before the situation gets totally out of control, we can quell the anger and get the parties talking rationally. Soon, I fear, it may become too late if we don't.
Then, for sure, Armageddon would be a reality that no one actually thought would happen.
