Happy New Year and Like a Snake

On Wednesday, with the rising of New Moon, the next Lunar New Year will begin. It will be, in Chinese lore, the Year of the Snake.

The Snake has both good and bad qualities associated with it.
Some of the most common foods for your carnivore are mice and rats.

Some of Taiwan’s indigenous peoples venerate snakes as guardian spirits, and while the island is home to species potentially deadly to humans, including vipers and cobras, deaths are rare given the wide availability of anti-venom.

The Asian zodiac is divided into twelve-year cycles, in this order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and finally Pig. In Vietnam, however, the Year of the Rabbit is celebrated as the Year of the Cat, due to the similar sounding name for Rabbit and Cat in Vietnamese.

Foods to eat? Why, festive cakes and puddings! And noodles, of course. For some people, they will enjoy a variety of delectable Asian Fusion meals including Sweet and Sour Chicken or Pork, Teriyaki Steak, Moo Goo Gai Pan, Fried Rice, Lo Mein, and that old stand by, Wonton Soup.

Red is the color of the season and the sound of firecrackers fill the air. Why? Because according to legend, these protect you from Nian, the underwater beast with sharp teeth and horns which will crawl out of the sea onto the land and attack the local village.

And finally, this year on February 12, the fifteen-day celebration is done, with the Lantern Festival, which welcomes the first Full Moon of the year, the end of Winter and the beginning of Spring. It is a Joyous Day, sometimes called Chinese Valentines Day, because young girls were allowed to go out and admire the lanterns of the young boys.

So, get ready to celebrate the coming Lunar New Year and treat your snake with kindness. Don’t slink or slither away in fear. It is, after all, his year to shine.

Happy New Year!
