Jewish Students Are NOT Safe on CUNY Campuses

As an alumnus of Queens College in Flushing, New York, I always felt I received a quality education, void of any discrimination or harsh attitudes towards others. And while it was a liberal but fair education, there was room for differing opinions.

Considering that I was a very conservative man in the 60s and 70s, I was able to find that the education I received did not offend my sensibilities. As, I matured, I was less a hard-core conservative and became more center-right, although I would sometimes espouse some very liberal ideas.

But now, I am disappointed to learn that CUNY, the entity which oversees twenty-five campuses and institutions, including eleven senior colleges, seven community colleges, and seven graduate, honors, and professional schools, has fallen victim to an anti-Israel, possibly anti-Semitic bent, similar to Harvard, Columbia, and other universities around the country.

It was reported in Thursday’s New York Post that the controversial chancellor of CUNY will continue to run the largest public urban university in the US, despite criticism over anti-Israel protests that have plagued its campuses, including Brooklyn College and elsewhere, including Queens College.

CUNY’s Board of Trustees recently conducted a job performance review of Felix Matos Rodriguez, who nabbed the gig in 2019, and gave him a thumbs-up to continue in his position.

He’s staying,” CUNY board chairman Bill Thompson said to the media.

A bipartisan group of nine New York City and state lawmakers condemned the chancellor in a scathing letter following the violence, demanding that Brooklyn College take swift action.

It is unacceptable but not surprising that almost two years after October 7th, after an investigation into CUNY and several public hearings, we are still grappling with disruptive and criminal behavior against Jewish students, encampments and masked agitators on campus,” read the letter.

One would think this behavior would be unacceptable on City-run campuses. But apparently, anti-Semitism is the new norm all over.

But then, the entire City Council is showing its anti-Semitic chops and the public is ready to nominate an anti-Semitic candidate for Mayor.

It is so disappointing. And SHAMEFUL.
