The big free agent get was gotten by the Mets with the announcement that Juan Soto will be signing a fifteen year, three quarters-plus of a BILLION dollar contract to play a game ten and twelve year-olds play for FREE. This includes a signing bonus of $75MM before he even steps into the clubhouse and tries on his jersey.
But here is a huge reality to consider. He is only one player and baseball isn’t played as an individual sport like golf or tennis.
It is a TEAM sport, played by twenty-six men who are contracted to give it their best everyday. And men can react either with positive or negative feelings, depending on their own considerations to how this signing may affect them.
And for the fans, you know, the people who pay to buy the tickets, and the team jerseys, and the beer, and the hot dogs and all the rest?
They will be asked to pay more, too. This isn’t the “pani e circi” world of the Roman Empire.
No, “free bread and circuses” entertainment doesn’t exist anymore. Soto and the Mets will be expected, no, REQUIRED to win every game. Or when they lose, as it happens in baseball, they will be expected to be the last team standing after the World Series is finished.
Every year. From now on.
And the unknown answer to the the question, 'What about Pete Alonso?' He has been the face of the team since he came up in 2019. Will ownership sign him to a long-term contract, too?
But for today, Met Fans everywhere are celebrating this huge win for their boys in the Orange and Blue. After all, they, along with Steve Cohen’s billions, have beaten the mighty Yankees and Dodgers and Braves and all the rest.
So congratulations to the New York Mets. YOU are this year’s Hot Stove Champions.
Are YOU going to Disney World?
