The Person of the Year is nothing more than a popularity contest, like voting for your High School Homecoming King and Queen. It is like trying to make sure that the couple chosen is dating, and will live “happily ever after”. Like Brenda and Eddie in the Billy Joel classic.
And as an American, I really don’t care about King Charles and his band of misfits, like his useless brother, Andrew, his needy son, Harry or his untalented, gold-digging daughter-in-law, Meghan. They are whiny, spoiled, pompous ne’er-do-wells, not fit to clean the royal stables.
But I have had the opportunity to meet Prince William and his charming wife, Catherine, one time in December 2014. They were gracious and surprisingly friendly. And I even mentioned it in my book, I Am A Paperback Writer, a book about the many famous people I met.
The reason I mention the Princess is this: it was reported that Catherine (Princess Kate) has named to the short list for Time’s Person of the Year. She is not one who seeks fame. Rather, it seems, she is a very private person. Especially with her cancer and her treatment.
As one who continues to battle my cancer, I can respect her position. She feels it is none of any one else's business. That is her right to her own privacy concerning her health. She isnt looking for pity or notoriety. I only occasionally give updates to let people know that it can be beaten with prayer, a strong support system and positivity.
Each person deals with personal difficulty in our own way. My children are adults, whereas hers are all under twelve. She is sensitive to that.
But she is brave in the face of this adversity and should be held in high esteem. It is hard enough as a private person to deal with it. I can only imagine how hard it is for a public person, like Catherine, to maintain some semblence of privacy.
So even if she is not chosen by Time, she certainly is MY Person of the Year.
