I have read other articles on the youth of America and the GOP. I agree with both authors, of the livewire.comarticle and the politico.com piece, that the Republican Party needs to update and change its image.
Marco Rubio and Rand Paul are two voices on the Libertarian side of the party. While both appear at first blush to be conservatives, they are not. There are others in the party who can attract the youth vote, but not like these two. Both of these men, along with Senator Ted Cruz and and Representative Paul Ryan, can attract the conservative wing as well.
Obviously, Senators Rubio and Cruz have the background and the ethnicity to attract Hispanic/Latino voters. Sens Rubio and Flake from Arizona were two of the members of the so-called "Gang of Eight" who have taken the lead to accept the criticism from the right regarding the Comprehensive Immigration Reform bill, now pending with the approved amendments in the Senate. The House has a like bill pending, as well.
Senator Paul has shown himself to be a valiant defender of our rights under the Constitution, as shown by his filibuster of the recent debate regarding drone strikes against American citizens both here and abroad. He has argued repeatedly regarding abuses that the government has tried against the press, gun control and other rights granted to us.
The face of the party is changing, but the changes are not coming quickly enough. Mitt Romney was a good candidate who, by the time the primaries were over, was bloodied apparently too far to beat the President on Election Day. And he ran out of money, which certainly did not help him.
The Republican Party, in order to ensure a win in the next two election cycles, ie, 2014 and 2016, needs to move to the center and understand the dynamics of the changes taking place in American society. This can be done, must be done, without losing the basis which makes the party great and without becoming the Democrat Party.
By following Senators Rubio and Paul, and the others discussed above, it will be done.
