They are Republican Mitch McConnell, and Democrats Jeanne Shaheen, Tina Smith and Gary Peters.
And today, while it was mildly speculated, the biggest surprise announcement was made. Eighty-year-old Dick Durbin, the No 2 Dem Senator, the Dem Whip, has decided to call it a career after forty-four years in the Congress, which was spent serving thirty-four years, thus far, in the Senate.
“The decision of whether to run has not been easy," Durbin said in a video posted to X. "I truly love the job of being a United States Senator. But in my heart I know it's time to pass the torch.”
He continued, “So, I am announcing today that I will not be seeking re-election at the end of my term."
This move leaves a huge hole to fill with now four known Democrat seats open for the taking. McConnell’s seat is considered pretty safe in a red state. But the others are not, especially Saheen (New Hampshire), Peters (Michigan) and Smith (Minnesota). Even Durbin (Illinois) is in play.
If Leader Schumer cannot retain even two seats, his days as leader will be numbered, too. After the most recent budget battle where he voted for the CR, he is already getting pressure from AOC and other progressives to go away.
As quickly as possible, if not sooner. If the progressives completely overtake the party.
The next eighteen months will be a political junky's fun ride. Don’t you agree? Watching the Democrat Party burn up in flames!!
Get me my popcorn.
