At this point last year, they seemed to be heading to the basement. What a difference a year makes!
And as of this writing, they have the best record in all of Major League Baseball.
After a slow start, last year's team MVP, Francisco Lindor, is hitting .309 with four home runs and 14 RBI to Pete Alonso's .341, six homers and 26 RBI. Both are carrying the team to win after win, with nightly co-stars.
And both the starting pitching and relief have been above expectations. The team is 8 and 2 in the last ten games and have won seven in a row. It is a team effort.
By Friday, tough decisions will have to be made, with Alvarez and McNeil expected back. The backup catcher, Senger will be the easier option as Alvarez is sure to start against the Nationals. But who is going to be dropped when McNeil returns? My bet would be either Taylor or Marte’. Both are struggling at the plate.
I certainly would keep Acuña and Baty’s bat is finally coming to life. And McNeil can play the outfield.
Unlike last year, when the Mets were tanking until May 29, this year, POBO David Stearns has some difficult choices to make, and he is happy about that. Much better to work from strength, yes?
Getting back to 1986 for another minute. That year, they ended at 108 and 54. This team is mirroring that pace. And they are poised to begin to run away with it.
If this keeps up, it will be a fun summer. Even following it down here in Florida. So keep the faith, Friends.
And remember to cheer Lets Go Mets!
