Over the next several months, we will witness the end of several dyes in food products manufactured and sold in the US. These dyes are already prohibited in foods sold in Europe and elsewhere.
These eight food dyes are petroleum-based, believed to be carcinogenic and are listed as follows:
• Blue No 1 – Found in M&Ms and Takis, among other snacks
• Blue No 2 – Found in Skittles and blueberry Pop Tarts
• Citrus Red No 2 -Found to make orange peels appear orange
• Green Dye No. 3 – Produced via chemical synthesis, and found in canned peas and sherbert
• Orange B – Color used in hot dog and sausage casings
• Red Dye 40 – Found in Kool-Aid, NyQuil and Starburst
• Yellow No 5 – Found in Mountain Dew and Twinkies
• Yellow No 6 – Found in Airheads, Jolly Ranchers and Lucky Charms
Some of these dyes are also known to cause behavioral and neurological issues, especially in children, lIke ADHD and severe allergic reactions.
“For companies that are currently using petroleum-based red dye, try watermelon juice,” Dr Markay suggested. “For companies currently combining petroleum-based yellow chemical and red dyes together, try carrot juice.”
“All of these industries cast a dark shadow historically over this agency and there’s so many conflicts that we are now systematically eliminating that has allowed them to suppress the science,” Secretary Kennedy stated. “There’s shockingly few studies, even on food dyes.”
While the dyes won’t be removed tomorrow, the process to remove them has begun. The regulations have been written and timeframes are in place.
And that is a great start.
