This Thursday, we celebrate the quintessential, uniquely American Holiday called Thanksgiving. We remember the reason for the day, which we learned back in elementary school.
Of course, we were taught that the first Thanksgiving was a love-fest between the surviving Pilgrims and the Native Americans in what became the Massachusetts Bay Colony, sitting down to a harvest meal, to give thanks for the bountiful meal of turkey, pies, vegetables and other associated foods. And perhaps, as with every legend, there may be some truth to it.
But as we all know, legends have a way to gloss over the real events to create a myth which sounds so much better than the truth. Knowing this, we accept the positive version of what may not have always been the best outcome of human interaction.
Nevertheless, this week we will once again remember the fable we accept as truth as we sit down with family and friends to enjoy our annual harvest feast of turkey, potatoes, or even lasagna, and the scrumptious desserts of pumpkin, apple or coconut custard pies, sfgoliatelle, cannoli, or pudding, reminiscing of earlier times, of dear ones no longer with us, honoring our freedoms which have been bequeathed to us from those who came before us.
And maybe even enjoy the parade, a football game or two, or even set our sites on the Christmas season that Thanksgiving traditionally kicks off, as we doze off after stuffing ourselves with our bounty. Or begin our quest to prepare for Black Friday shopping.
Whatever you plan for this week, I wish for you a commencement to another joyous holiday season, with peace, love and joy for which we all aspire and desire. Happy Thanksgiving!
