The Magic Italians Enjoy With Saint Joseph

Since the beginning of February, if not before, we have seen many posts across social media by Italian bakeries and Italian families making Zeppole di San Giuseppe, or St Joseph Cake, honoring the Feast of St Joseph, Jesus' adopted father, which is celebrated on March 19. This holiday is also known as Father's Day in Italy.

Generally, this treat is featured all through the Lenten Season, along with Hot Cross buns right through Easter Sunday. Then, unlike hot cross buns, they will continue to sold all year in Italian pastry shops, though they will not be the featured dessert.

Instead, cannoli, cream puffs, tarts and other delectable treats will be sold equally, along with cookies, cakes and donuts. All wonderful delights.

These pastries come filled with either custard or cannoli cream, and decorated with a cherry, an orange candied fruit slice, sprinkles, or other sweet topping. In most cases, powdered sugar is added, if desired.

The tradition is rooted in the Middle Ages in Sicily, where a severe drought threatened famine. After locals prayed to St Joseph for rain, the rain arrived, leading to a vow to honor him with a feast that included these special pastries.

The word zeppola may derive from zeppa (a wooden wedge or shim), linking the pastry to St. Joseph, who was a carpenter. Another legend says he sold fritters to support his family while fleeing to Egypt.

Whether or not the legends are true, one must admit it is like tasting Sweet Heaven exploding in your mouth. Many people actually close their eyes while  imagining a joyful moment, wishing it would last.

So, no matter if you are Italian, or sometimes, wonder why all the fuss when we enjoy this treat, it in your best interest to head down to your local Italian pastry shop and get yours before I do. And sit back and taste what Heaven will be like
